TURF TOPICS.
| At the annua) meeting of mem'.iers of the Auckland Trotting Cluh on Tuesday last the affairs of that liody were shown to be in so highly prosperous a state as to constitute a record, and with the nice little nest egg of £IOOO at fixed deposit the outlook can be termed decidedly promising. In referring to the satisfactory position of the >'lub, the chairman, .Air. John Lowe, paid a welldeserved compliment to the secretary, .Mr 0. F. Mark, to whose good management the club owes very much. Discussing Poisedon and Ca.-bine, a Melbourne writer says:—"With the <xception of a few inequalities toward the end, for which excuses were found, Poisedon's career last season was extraordinary—so extraordinary, in fact, that some began to look upon him as a second Carbine. But Poisedon lias not attained to the eminence yet, whatever the future may determine. I think it probable that Carbine was the best horse that th? world has ever seen. Carbine was never beaten as a two-year-old; he beat all sorts n! horses over all sorts of courses, carrying all sorts of weights; and surely there never was a horse that won races in the face of such difficulties as he had to contend with. Still, Poised™ is entitled to take rank as a great horse, anil distinguished from a good horse, and at !>st 31b in the CauMic'ld Cup his ihance is to be respected, although it is a weight that no four-year-old has yet succeeded with. When Paris won the second time he was an aged hor-e. and he carried 9st 41b." Colonel St. Leger, in whose honor the great three-year-old race run annually on the Town Moor at Doncaster was instituted, is credited with having expressed the wish that when an owner won the race three times it should be for the future called by the name of the lucky sportsman, but this wish has not been carried out, presumably on the grounds that "the St. L?<;e.r" has won a good place in the hearts' of British sportsmen.
