NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

| The Borough Council met last night. 1 Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr] E. Dockrill) and Crs. Brown, H. R. Cattley, J. Morey, C. T. Mills, W. A. Oollis, A, A. Pikctt, and F. T. Bellringer. Leave was granted Crs. Coleman and Boon, CARRINGTOX ROAD LIGHTING. Mr T. B. Ulanchett, clerk to the Cirrington Koad Board, wrote in connection i with the lighting of Victoria road and enclosing a copy of the Taranaki County i Council's letter undertaking to pay the charges. The letter also suggested that I the light just outside Mr Kemp's house i should be placed a little lower down the road ,and another erected just on the borough boundary.

In answer to his Worship. Cr. Browne ' saFd the line would cost about £ioo, ' but the material was in stock. The only cash required would be for labor. The engineer s.rid the labor should ■ cost about £2O. ' Cr. Browne said the Council had been expecting this letter for fully twelve r months. They had offered to erect ' twelve lights between the town boundary ard the 'bus terminus (about a mile n-hnlf) for €■!."> a year. ' On the motion of Crs. Bellringer -mil ' Collis it was decided to proceed with the work at a cost of not more than £HO. (V. Browne moved tint the lighting near Mr Kemp's be altered as suggest':!] 7>y the Carrington Road Board. An amendment was moved to refer the matter to the Electric Lighting Committee. The engineer said this was undoubtedly '< a badly lighted place, and agreed with the proposition to move the present light one or two poles further down, and to place another on the boundary. Referred to the Electric Lighting Committee. •■•—,. MOUSWORTH STREET EXTENSION. I Mr T. Kouayne, General Manager of Railways, wrote in reference to the extension of Molcsworth street from Kiwau street to the Huatoki river. Arrangements for obtaining the valuation of the land were in progress, and as soon as it had been valued be would communicate further. I

The Mayor stated that this letter wis the answer to his telegrams. The Council would admit that they were no furtiler ahead. The Town Clerk mentioned that the ! question referred to in the letter had been settled. .What the Council want- , »1 was a valuation of the land from the : Huatoki stream to St. Aubyn street. ' Cr. Bellringer said it was most im- ! portant that the (matter should he put in order with the utmost despatch, else ' there was a probability of serious in- i' convenience to the ITarbor Board on ae- i count of the ecrly expiry of the leases of reserves adjoining. It seemed thit "someone had blundered" in the first in- ; stance at Wellington. This, however, , did not interfere very much with the f Council, for they had the Minister's ansnranee that the matter had been dp- t proved, and that they would eventual- 1. ly Ret what they are' striving for. He moved that a letter be forwarded to the •' [General Manager of Railways stating {' that what was now necessary was a valuation of the portion of the. piece of P land from the ITuatoki stream to St. ? An,byri street, seeinjr 'that the other matter had already been arranged. *' This course was adopted. "

The matter of draining Messrs .vole Bros.' boiling-down works and of clearing gorse on the abattoir reserve were j referred to the Abattoirs Committee. ] Mr Kendall mentioned that he 'lad ; stopped minor leaks in the saltwater ; baths, and others required attention. 1 Owing to the settling of the building or i some other cause, the roof gutters leaked | hazily.—Referred to the Baths Commit- 1 tee. At the wi»h of the committees 'he town schools were being disinfected. The engineer also submitted a plan ■ of levels of an improved Morley street, i giving a grade of almost 1 in 13 flriu i Vivian street to Barrett street. To ; adopt this would mean the removal of i something like 2500 cubic yards from < tli? surface blow Bulteel street and the 3 filling-in of something like 5000 euVic. , yards above Fulford street. ITe report- ( ed that to drain Powderham street near j Dawson street, as requested at list nicctinc, would cost £l,lO, and there ,- wonld be seven connections.—Referred i to the Drainage Committee. ] Matters rcftrring to the paintinj and ventilation of the Mnrtnarv Chanel iit , the Cemetery were referred to the He- , serves Committee. < EIGHT. ', Mr. Black, electrical engineer, reported < that the whole of the machinery under i Messrs Turnbull and Jones' contract had I now arrived, wiih the exception of a 1 regulating resistance which appeared to i have been short-shipped. Another re- 1 distance had been damaged iu transit, I and the contractors had these [natters i in hand. The generator ''spares'' which did not arrive with the other matcri'il Kere now to hand. At the power-house the machine foundations had been completed, and the machines were now being erected. the sub-station switchboard had been fixed in position. The powerhouse building extension was in about i the same state as it wis two months ago. He mentioned several matters i that were wanting, and stated that all this work should have been done beroie they started to put in the machines. In answer to a question, Cr. Browne said he expected that the new machinery would be in running order in a week or two. Cr. Pikett said the remarks of the electrical engineer looked like a reflection on the engineer. Was there some overlapping, or was it that the borough engineer had no interest in the contract now as the result of the Council's recent action in taking part of the work out o.f hi 3 haxls. O. Browne said tint the painting in:l other works could not be proceeded with in this weather. The contra ;tor had been out of the district, too. Cr. Browne «aid the matter was wholly in the hands of the borough engineer. THE TRAMS. Cr. Pikett moved, 'i hat a deputation consisting of Cn. Bellringer, Colli*, .md the mover wait o;. the County Council I and the Fitzroy Town Board for the purpose of ascertaining whether they would be disposed to consider the question of voting an annual subsidy !o- ---: wards the cost of laying and maintaining a tramway service from Fitzroy to the breakwater should the Council" decide to take any steps in the (matter.
