DAMATIC POISON MYSTERY.

BANKER AND HIS TYPIST ARRESTED. New York, July 15. F. 11. Magill, a bunker, of Clinton, Illinois, has been arrested at Dan Dle<'o, California, with his second wife, and charged with murder of Magiil's first wife.

The arnt was due to an outburst of public indignation at Clinton, where [the first Mrs Magill died on May 31 last. On June 30th Magill married his typist, who is only seventeen years old. Magill, who belongs to a very wealthy family, inherited £20,000 a few years ago, and lie very quickly spent his money, i

ITc married his first wife in 1890, and he has one daughter, who is now seventeen years old.

Last year Magill introduced his typist as a member of the household. Mrs Magill made no outward show of protest, and so far as the public generally knew, both she and her husband were on good terms 'On the morning of May 31st last, Magill called a doctor to "his house and showed him his wife, who was lying dead in bed. Jler head was covered with a pillow whicli was saturated with chloroform, while there was at the side of the bed 'a bowl which had evidently contained chloroform. The dot-tor certified that Mrs Magill had committed suicide. At the coroner's inquest four letters, alleged to have been written by Mrs Magill, were produced, bidding her friends good-bye, and recommending her husband to marry the typist. On this evidence the jury returned ;i verdict of suicide.

Later, Magill, his typist, and also his daughter disappeared, after he had first turned all his available property into cash. :

When news of Magill's second marriage became known, the friends of the dead woman were so enrn:."; 1 that they demanded the arrest of the husband anil the typist. ' ' ' The specific charge against the husband is that lie poisoned his wife with strychnine, and after her death saturated her pillow with chloroform in orcWrto mislcail the doctor.

Both Magill and the girl strongly protest their innocence, and say that there is a conspiracy against them.
