DISPOSAL OF DAIRY PRODUCE.

A SOUTHLAND MOVEMENT.

The dairy factory owners of Southland are not satisfied with the present system of disposing of their output, (says the Southland News' but cannot come to a decision as to the best method of arriving at the end they have in view. The meeting held in Invercargill on Tuesday was large and representative, and when the proceedings opened it wag expected that some definite action would be decided upon, hut as Hie meeting proceeded a difference of opinion was found to exist, though there was unanaimity on the point that some improvement on the practice now obtaining is required, it appears that the buyers visit the factories and come to arrangements with them, which, in r,he put, have not always proved remunerative to the merchant, as more than one speaker at .Tuesday's meeting spoke of | a number of buyers of last year's product who had suffcTed loss. It was admitted that prices had been satisfactory for some time past, and, in the circumstances, it might have been expected that things would have been allowed to remain as they were, but, as indicated, the general feeling is in the opposite direction. It might be suggested that the factory owners have been induced to move in the matter by the impression that the buyers this season might seek to make up their losses of last year, and that the suppliers will suffer, but whatever their motive, the opinion fc firmly held that their interests would be better served were a different system adopted. It was proposed to hold auction sales in Invercargill monthly, to appoint an agent in London, and to form a eo-operative society, but none of the proposals found favor, and it was decided that a representative from eich of the factories should meet on Tuesday next to formulate some scheme for dealing with the situation.
