WEST END SCHOOL.
PRESENTATION 01' SWIMMING CEIITIEICAXES.
(Several citizens, including his "Worship uie Mayor and Air \V. h. Newman, a member of the New Plymouth. Municipal Baths Committee, attended at the .West End school yesterday afternoon, when the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association's certilicates were presented to the school pupils, who had attained proficiency in swimming during the past swimming season. Air H. J. Gilbert, chairman of the school committee, intro-duced-his Worship, who briefly addressed the children beiore proceeding to the distribution of the certilicates. He remarked on the general utility of swimming as an aid to health, whilst, he said, none could foresee how valuable in time to come might be the knowledge of Saving life, He noticed from the list of awards that the girls had been most successful this year, securing twenty-six certificates against the boys' fourteen. He referred to the assistance given the pupils by the instructor, Mr Ogilvie, and by the teaching staff at the school. He then presented certificates as under:—To those who had swum 220 yards: Eileen Hammond, Annie Bullard, Irene Thomp- ' son, Jessie Mclsaac, Mary Tiplady, Erie ■ Lcpinc, Claude" Jury, Archie Bacon, Chari lie Bacon, and Jack McCrackcn. 440 I yards: Winnie Morrison, Mabel Ambury, ■ Connie Nixon, Nora Lepine, Nellie White, ■■ Annie Trigger, Hilda Rollo, Ivy Thom--1 son, Myra Stonr, Elsie Gilbert, George ' Marnier, Ken Stohr, Alfred Bowie, ■ Hiorns Mander, Jffiiert Howell, Willie ■ Francis, Reggie Brokenshire, Robert Mc- ; Manus. 880 yards: Effle TiplaTy, Ethel Johnston, Toida Bayly, Rose Rea, Gordon Hammond, Bertie White. One mile: Eva Jury, Nora Cfozier, Flossie White, Joyce Hempton, Elsie White, R. O. C. Cowling. The prizes for qnickcstflfcssing were won by Elsie White and EDie Fuller.
Then, on liehalf the swimming class, his Worship presented to Mr Ogilvie a handsome silver teapot, well deserved and well earned.
Mr Ogilvie briefly responded, attributing the success of the children to their own hard work.
Mr Newman also congratulated the children on their success, and urged still greater efforts. Mr Gilbert having given .the boys a hint that they shonhT try and get even with tho girls, cheers wore given for the Mayor, Mr" Ogilvie, the teachers, and Mr Gilbert, and tlie gathering dispersed.
