Per Preaa Association. Auckland, Thursday. At the Police Court to-day, Edward Hallctt was charged with having sent to sea about March 30 the paddle steamer Te Aroha in such an unseaworthy state that the lives of her officers and crew were likciy to be endangered, and Win. Thomas Mincham was charged with taking the vessel to sea in such a condition, The case was opened and adjourned for a we»k. At the Rotorua train accident enquiry this morning two of the train men stated that Maori children were in the habit of entering trucks and carriages at Ngalirn, and there was some danger of couplings or cocks being shifted by them. The half-yearly meeting of the Hibernian Society of Now Zealand, attended by delegates from the whole of the colony, passed a resolution congratulating Bishop Lenihan on his jubilee. The funeral fund totalled £646s—an increase for the half-year of £199. The sum of £l6O had been expended on death claims. On the general account there was a balance of £240. The amount loaned on mortgage at 5 per cent, was £5885. A motion was carried that steps should be taken to encourage Irish emigration to New Zealand. The following officers were elected: District president, Mr B. Dane; vicepresident, Mr T. Pirend; secretary, Mr W. Kane; treasurer, Mr M. J. Sheahan; auditors, Messrs P. J. O'Meara and J. B. Stead.
Ohristchurch, Thursday Maclntyre was brought before' the Court this morning and formally charged with misappropriating money. Ho was remanded till to-morrow, bail being allowed at £2OO, -
Dunedin, Thursday. The Dental Hospital is gaining scant support since its inception eight weeks ago. Only forty patients have been admitted, an average of less than one a day. The staff consists of seven honorary dental surgeons, who, with three students, are in attendance each morning. Extractions with anaesthetics are free.
At the inquest on William Millar, who suicided in a cell at the Central Police Station, the jury added a rider that the attention of the authorities should lw called to the necessity of having observation wards where cases'of a like nature could be treated otherwise than in prisons or'police stations.
Wellington, Thursday. The Hutt Park and Racecourse Board (in whom is vested'the reserve formerly used as a racecourse by the Wellington Racing Club) objected to the valuation of £2400 on the ground that they had only limited power of leasing. The Assessment Court ruled against them, and they appealed. Judge Cooper has upset the decision on the ground that, owing to the conditions under which the land is held, the property has no marketable value, as it cannot be sold. The valuation, he saj's, must be not on the basis of an unrestricted estate, in fe« simple, but upon that" of the limited powers of disposition which the appellants possess. Invercavgill, Thursday. Judge Williams allowed the appeal of I Frank Coutts, who was fined £SO for sly grog selling. His Honor said that since the ease came before the Magistrate facts had come to light which completely discredited the principal witness for the prosecution, who made a deliberate attempt to obtain money from Coutts to suppress his evidence. No Judge or jury would be justified in giving the smallest credence to the evidence of that witness. The conviction was | quashed, ' ''[.SJ^fjJM At the aunual meeting of the Starr Bowkett Society the chairman, stated that the advances for eleven years amounted to £93,063, of which £33,259 was repaid. The society had not had one bad account. £44,000 had been lent free of inter .-st. At the present rate of progress the society would require to be enlarged at an early date. Wanganui, Thursday. At the Supreme Court this morning, John Olsen was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and one flogging of 25 lashes with the cat for entering the premises of a married woman at night and attempting a criminal assault. His Honor said he was opposed to long sentences, but in such caseß as this would make the punishment sharp. ' Nelson, Thursday. A Chinaman named Ah Moy was fined £2o,_ with the alternative of six months' imprisonment for having opium in his possession and keeping opium on his premises for smoking purposes. Feilding, Thursday. At the annual meeting of the Cheltenham Dairy Company yesterday the balance sheet showed a profit for last year of close on £IOOO.
Hawera, Thursday. lliree years ago rating on unimproved values was adopted in the Borough of Ttawera. Yesterday a poll was taken on a proposal to rescind the system. It was negatived by 165 to 108. Marton, Thursday. A young woman living at Marton, while returning from a visit to friends was brutally assaulted near Kakariki Bridge, yesterday afternoon. She was , knocked and kicked about in a coldI blooded manner by a man believed to be a native. She was rendered unconscious. Afterwards she was found wandering about a paddock in a dazed condition. Her face was so much swoollen that she was unable to see, for some timrfr She has little recollection of what occurred. The police are making Inquiries, but are reticent about giving details.
