Thoy eomplam that even these increases will not fully counteract the injury done to trade by the new Federal imposts. A number of factories are reducing tha number of hands. THE ATTITUDE OF LABOR. London, August 23. A cablegram sent to the London Times slated (hat, owing to Australian importers, rasing their prices much beyond what was necessitated by the increases in the tariff, the Australian Labor party was strenuously supporting local manufacturers, regardless of im- - porters' interests. The Westminster Gazette, commenting on this, declares that it is impossible for Australia to grow and inorease in population if the LborHat make common cause with the nianu-' facturcrs in restraining trade. A DISQUIETING SUGGESTION. TARIFF LIKELY TO AFFECT AUSTRALTA'S CREDIT. Received 25th, 4.47 p.m. London,. August 24. In the question asked in the House of Commons, Mr Harold Cox' suggested that, as the new Australian tariff was likely to impede Australia's development, and thus impair her credit, it would be expedient to omit Australian stocks from the list of trustee securities _ Mr Asquith/replied that the Australian Commonwealth Parliament was still considering the tariff, and it was impossible to foresee its final shape. He added that the Lord High Chancellor was not empowered to exclude from the category of trustee securities any colonial slock which complies with the requirements of the Colonial Stock Act of 1900;.
