RIOT IN COURT.
SEX*.\TrOXAU SCENE AT THE) AVADDIXGTON TRIAU
Brussels, June 29*. Another sensational scene occurred in j the Assize Court to-day during the trial r.f Carlo-, Waddington, son of the former Chilian Charge d'ArTaires, for the murder of Kenor Balmaceda. \Vhen .\f. Bonnevie, the counsel for the lialinareda family, read a number of letter, written by Scnorita, Waddington to Balmaceda, who betrayed her, an extraordinary tumult arose, which resulted in the trial being adjourned. I -M. Bonnievie endeavored to show that, instead of Balmaceda having betrayed Senora Waddington, tlie latter had made advances to him. To prove this, he produced a bundle of letters written by her. M. Bonnievie declared that on one occasion Balmaceda discovered written to Senorn Waddington by an Englishman, whom she met on the steamer, while travelling from Chili to Europe. The let- I ter contained the passage: "Do you love me as much as beforeV Some of the letters contained passages which should not have been rend in public. Carlo* Wadding!on, overcome by indignation, burst into tears during the recital. Thereupon his counsel. 51. .Tanson. shouted to ,\l. Boitnevic: "Enough: enough. Stop this scandalous behavi-
"I will do my duty," retorted M. lionnevie.
"You insult an unhappy man needlessly."' replied 51. .lanson, hotly, "you dishonor yourself!" The statement waa received with thunders of applanse. Judge, jurymen, counsel, and all the spectators rose, ami lor some minutes the uproar was indescribable. The majority of the spectators not only cheered 11. Janson, but hooted his opjionent.
The President of the Court was unable to make himself heard, and the gendarmes vainly endeavored to restore order. Even the olfirials of the court joined in the denunciation of M. Bonnievie. When the tumult had been partially quelled, Carlos Waddinglon was removed from the dock in a fainting condition, the galleries were cleared, and the trial adjourned until Monday. When M. Bonnevie left the court he was forced to escape by the back door to avoid a hostile crowd which assembled to attack him. The President announced that he would report the conduct of several lawyers pre-ent to the Bar Association.
