SOME HIGH BATES OF INTEREST. A relnni presented to the House hist week shows that during the year ended March, 1000, the number of mortgages registered in the colony was 18,001. representing a total of no less a sum than £13,11(1.000. The amounts for various districts were: Wellington, C4.2S.Vwii: Canterbury. £2,774.004; Auckland. CI.(118.035: o'tagn, £007,500; Ilawke's 1!.. v. €047,717: Taraiuki, C022.2K(i: Sunt bland, £503,274; Poverty liny, .€5(12.085: Xelsnn, £200,054; j Marlborough. £170,68!); West-land £30.400.
Nearly one-half of the total amount vi/. C0.:il;).07» was advanced at 5 p.-r cent. Six per'cent, was charged in respect of €1.082,8*4, and sVi"per cent, was the r.lle au't'eed Upon in regavd to C1.27fi.380. Ten per rent, was charged for €81.277. v.hiie C'Oil was borrowed at 20 per cent., and for one amount of £SO, lent in Taranakl, the interest was as high as 24 per cent. Tn respect It: £13.270, no interest was charged, and other small sums were lent at various low rates of interest. j Of the total amount, £3,(513,087 was advanced in 303 mortgages of sums over £SOOO each. During ihe same period, mortgages In the extent of £8,108,003 were realised.
A statement of business transacted under the Land Transfer Act during (lie! last financial year shows that the appliealions represented £1,200,041, the transfers £13.005.013. and the mortgages £12,708.772. The total fee received during the period amounted to .■€42.081.
The total amount secured by mortgage under the Act of March 31 last was £50,007.070, as against £53,480,008 al the end of the previous year.
