DRAUGTHS.

A large number of the competitors in .the recent draughts tournament and of those who contributed to the prize fund, met at the Jubilee Dining Rooms last night. After an excellent dinner his Worship tho Mayor rose to present the prizes. Before doing so he expressed his pleasure that steps had been taken to bring draughts players together. He was especially pleased to Bee the large number of young players engaged. He trusted that an impetus to tho game would bo given by the provision of a room in the new library building specially set apart for draughts and chess. (Applause.) And that when he looked in some evening he would find the room lull. Tn days to come he felt sure that New Plymouth players would fully uphold the reputation of the town hi any tournaments in which they might be engaged. They were going, he "understood, to form a draughts club, and ha wished it every success. He then presented the prizes as follows: First class: J. Bruce, one set of carvers and gold i medal; G. Davy, second, cheque of £1 ! Is; C. D. Chant, third, cash 15s; E. Rogers, fourth, cash, 7s Gd and special: W. Jenkinson. fifth, trophy value 10s. Second class: W. Hooker, Ist, £l, and silver medal; A. Willis, 2nd, cash 17s fid; W. Oliver, 3rd. 10s and picture; T. fl llliams, 4th, 7s 0d and special; H. Taylor, sth, silver-mounted pipe, value 10s Third class: A. I'. McGonagle, Ist, set of carvers and silver medal; C. Gilbert 2nd, 10s and cruet; F. Baker, 3rd, r.s and silver-mounted pipe; J. Bullot, 4th, ss, and special; Harth, 6th, silvermounted pipe.

The gathering passed hearty votes of t.innks to the donors of prizes, and to Mr Jenkinson, who acted as secretary, the latter remarking that Mr Bruce seiir w,ns responsible for the initiation of the tournament.

Ihe gathering then "wont into harmony," a good progvammo of songs and other items filling in a very pleasant evening. Those contributing to the programme wore Messrs J. Jenkinson I Taylor, De k Haye, Willis, Beadle, Mills and Cody. A CLUB FORMED. During an interval Mr Cody moved, and Mr Bruce seconded, that a club be formed.

The motion was carried, and the sut;seription was fixed at 2s fld for the remainder of the present season. The following officers were elected: President, Mr G. Bruce; vice-presidents Messrs W. G. Malone and Geo. Browne;' secretary and treasurer, Mr W, Jenkinson; committee, Messrs Cody, Bennett Davy, J. Boon, Oliver, and Beais. '
