FOUR YEARS IMPRISONMENT.

dr. dalziel found guilty. ILLEGAL OPERATION PRACTICE. Per Press Association. Auckland, August 14. The trial of Dr. J as. Dalziel, practising at l'ukckohe, on a charge of performing .an illegal operation at Auckland, was concluded at the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Dcnnislon. The jury retired at 1.15 p.m., and re turned at 3.50 with a verdict of guilty. The foreman stated that the juiy unanimously wished to recommend prisoner to mercy on account of his age (sixty). llis lionor asked what was known or the prisoner, and the Hon. <l. A. Me, MK.C.', stated that pritoner had lieen sua- ' ] pec-ted of carrying on this class of prae« | Itice. The only other thing against him ' was that he had been convicted of such minor matters as assault, etc. 1 llis Honor said that, although he 3 could not put to the jury letters winch 8 were found on the prisoner when arrested, still he was entitled to Uke = them into consideration when sentenc- " ing the prisoner. It was a well-known fact that medical men were frequently " asked to perform such operations, and were written to, but when it was found ? that a medical man, and a country prutn titioner more particularly, had on him '■ when arrested several letters of this nature from people residing in diifereni parts of the country, and that tin writers assumed he would comply with their request, one could not help realiav ing that Dr. Dalziel had- a reputation foi this kind of thing. The prisoner said that inquiries made by the police showed that these letters ee had not been replied to. :11 His Honor said he entirely agreed with the jury's verdict, though it gave 'Si him great pain. He had to perform hie ■'H* duty to the country, and he could not see his way to sentence prisoner to les; C(1 than four years. Ho remarked that it I] i- was a much shorter sentence than usu ally given in these cases.
