BREACHES OF THE SHIPPING ACT.

At the Police Court to-day, the Inver*eargill Shipping Company was charged, with failing to supply to the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Dunedin their agreement with the crew of the steamship Riniu within twenty-one days after the termination of tho said agreement. There were also three charges against the master of the Rimu, Johan Bergquish of (1) failing to cause the crew to be properly exercised in boat drill; (2) failing to enter in the official log tho date of boat drill; and 3) failing to enter in the log the -■£- draught of water and Cvexterit of freeboard. For'the defence, it was ex. >-' C plained that the omissions, except aa £'» regards boat drill, were due to the vessol being laid up. The action was £ brought as a warning to others. The ''■ Magistrate said under the circumstances he would fine the shipping company 20s -"t and costs (£2 9s). The captain was fliied on the first charge 80s and cost* I ,CJ 10s), and in the second case 20s, nnd costs (£2 0s). ,
