TROOPS SENT TO BELFAST. London, August 2. The Essex Regiment, from Curragh, has been transferred to Belfast. THE POLICE GRIEVANCES. MEETING AT ATHENREY. BELFAST STRIKERS SENT TO COUNTRY DISTRICTS. Received 4th, 4.28 p.m. London, August 3. The police at Athenrey (Galway) met and ventilated their claims, despite the district inspector's prohibition, coupled with a promise to consider their grievances. Four hundred of the most active demonstrators at Belfast have been tranferred to the wildest country districts.
COALMEN'S STRIKE SETTLED. INCREASED PAY GRANTED. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS RE FUSED. Received 4th, 4.26 p.m. London, August 3. Tho coalmen's dispute has been settled on the basis of an increase of pay. The coaldealers insisted that employers were enabled to engage whom they liked without trade union dictation. The railway and steamship companies take the same stand in connection with the dockers' and carters' strike.
AN INIQUITIOUS PROPOSAL. REFUSED BY MR BHIRELL. Received 4th, 4.26 p.m. London, August 3. The Shipping Federation complained to the lit. Hon. Mr Birrell (Chief Secretary for Ireland.) that since the resources of the Government at Belfast were unequal to the task of protecting men at lawful work, the Federation btcompelled to provide their own force. Air Birrell declined to receive the deputation from the Federation, declaring the local authorities were able to deal with the situation.
