Mr Loren E. Hunt, civil engineer, of Berkeley, California, recently conducted most exhaustive tests of Messrs John Wilson and Co.'s Portland cement. Star brand, manufactured at Auckland. His report was for the Victor Engine and Motor Company, of San Francisco, and a copy of it has been obtained by the manufacturers. The tests were made to determine its specific gravity, fineness, time.of setting, tensile , strength, constancy of volume, and were made according to methods adopted by the American Society of Testing Minerals, and gave most satisfactory results. The "Star' brand cement has proved itselfnot only in strength tests of a moat exhaustive nanire in the laboratory, but also in actual construction, and engineers are now specifying its use in bridges and other permanent works.
