THE AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS.

Per Press Association. Auckland, July 25. The City Council held a special meeting to-day to consider a proposal to amend the by-laws to allow a certain number of passengers to stand on the tramcars.

A deputation from the Tramways Union, strongly protested against the proposal, and the matter was eventually referred back to the committee for re-consideration.

The Mayor is forwarding a letter to the Chairman of Directors of the Electric Tramway Company, London, with reference to the friction in the matter of the running and management of the trams, notably the insuiliciency of rollingstock and electric power, upon which the public feeling runs very high. The Mayor asks if the company is prepared to iiormiinte for the sale of the whole of its interests in the tramways to a local Tramways Board to work the concern' on behalf of the various local bodies Interested. If so, upon what basis can the price to be paid be assessed?

The Mayor estimates tluit forty per cent of the shares are held in Auckland, and the British Electric Traction Company ho'd the remainder.
