THE CASE OF MEIKLE.

Per Press Association. Wellington, July.2s. In reply to a deputation from the Meikle Committee which waited on him to-day, the Premier said it was one of the fin* sides of nature to see a committee working on behalf of a man who they considered had been wrongfully sent to prison. He thought it was proper to give effect to the recommendations of the Commission, and he intimated that legislation was being prepared with the object of Saving Meikle's name deleted' from the criminal records. Tho amount of compensation was a difficult one to determine, but it was being enquired into by the whole of the Ministers. He did not wish to reflect on the Commission's report in any wav, but he said it contained matters which made the task of the Government In this direction a difficult one. Probably a determination would be arrived at i» the next fortnight, and he would let the secretary of the committee know the result.
