Sydney, Julv 23. 'I lie Xavua from thn Islands "reports that the volcanic disturbance reported from Tonga ~-a s located south-west of the island some miles from shore. Ths Premier of Tonga, who visited the spot states that there appear to be vents not far from each other. There was a rushing, booming sound. A column of smoke and steam, mixed with black pumice, was thrown in the air with tremendous noise. 'I ho column was close on a hundred feet high. The vents were playing alternately, and should the outbreak continue, tht formation of a new island is predicted. Melbourne, Julv 211. Sir John Forrest does nut approve Sir Win. Lyne's suggestion for sending cable news to European papers, because the news sent would be tinged with the view, "t the fioverument of the day. Brisbane." Julv 22. A number of Kanakas wailed'on the authorities and the Government and expressed fear of being murdered if dpported to Manilla. The I Governor sympathised with them.
