OPUNAKE RAILWAY LEAGUE.
(Own Correspondent). The annual meeting of the Opunake branch of the Opunake-Eltham Railway League was held in the Town Hall on Monday, over 40 being present. Mr W. (.'. Dudley presided. The balance sheet showed receipts to be £5 15s, expenses £3 2s, balance £2 13s. The delegates' expenses, amounting to £lO, were yet to be paid, so that there was practically a debit balance of £7 7s. Mr Dudley said the League had done as much as possible. They had a statement from the Minister that the line would cost £150,000, and that it would be on the old surveyed route. Exception had lwen taken by some members to his action in connection with the tram scheme. Even if the train comes to nothing the advocates of the railway will have an additional lever to place before the Government. As some people were taking exceptien to his backing up the tram scheme he would not seek re-election to the chair. Members, however, were of opinion that Mr Dudley was the heart and soul of the League, and he w.13 reelected. The following were elected a committee: —Members of the Egmont County Council, with the addition of Messrs Trotter, Mclnnes, C Hurst, A. H. Moore and Dunn; secretary and treasurer, Mr (S. P. Armstrong. The subscription was fixed at as. The question of the tram scheme detracting from the railway was argued, and it was resolved, That this League again urges on the Government the absolute necessity of the construction of the Opunake-Eltlmm railway on the old surveyed route.
