PERSONAL.
Mr O. I). McLean, of. Messrs A. J. Entrieau and Co., Auckland, is staying at the White Hart Hotel. At a gathering of volunteer officers at the White Hart Hotel yesterday evening, Colonel Ellis, V.1)., retired, was pre sented by Lieut.-Col. Okey with a gold watch and chain, a gift from the Tnranaki Battalion in recognition of the assistance rendered by him to volunteering in Tarauaki. Colonel Ellis first took part in volunteering in the Old Country in 1858j and joined the Tarauaki Light Infantry as color-sergeant. This corps afterwards became the Tarauaki Riiic volunteers. He eventually rose to tho position of captain in the company, and was afterwards appointed major of the battalion, then extending from New Plymouth to Palmersfon North. He has for many years been a foremost figure in Tarauaki volunteering circles.
