NELSON V. COMBINED CLUBS. A match was played yesterday on the Racecourse between teams representing Nelson and luglewood, Carrington Roadj and New Plymouth combined. The members ol the latter clubs, who are playing in the representative match to-day were excluded. The play was fast, but not oi a high j scientific order. Nelson were superior in I the circle, otherwise the teams were evenly matched. Wanstel shot two and Hurst three goals for Nelson, and M. Avery and Harris one each for the 'combined team. The visitors did not play a goal-keep-er, but had three full backs, a very doubtful innovation. Winsett was the best of their full backs. Croudis and Spear hit fairly, but did not tield well. Of Spear, La Motte, and Taylor (halves) Spear showed to Trt-st advantage,, feeding his wing well. The forwards were the strongest part of the team, the wing men, Austisa and Hurst keeping their places well and centreing correctly, and all were in the circle ready when necessary. Staples usually won the bully and Wanstell was always prominent. Or' the local men, Hudson in goal was over-weighted at lirst, but improved later, lie conld have used his feet to more advantage. Clapham was perhaps the best player oil the local side. He fielded the ball well, and usually beat his man. His placing, too, showed to advantage. Bruce was not up to representative form. Of the halves, Cutfield,; Turner, andAtnbury were the most eon- ' spicuous, the former being lh?» pick, bis stick play being very clever. With a little more experience he wil 1 make a giH»d player. Ambury played fairly well, but has a bad habit of using only om- hand in hitting, which he should try to coneel. Nam- and Kigali were the piek of the forward-, both being eager, the two goal* being the result of their fast following up. Reid did liul get enough opportunities, but he played correctly. M. Avery and A. MeEwan were over-weighted. The former played better after changing places with Ambury. Mr F. Uolwrl-oii was a capable and impartial referee.
