WASHED OVERBOARD.
MAX LOST FROM A SCHOONER. Per Press Association. Dunedin, July 21. The schooner Waratah, which left Lyttelton on the 12th inst, for Dunedln, arrived to-day. She met with a succession of southerly and south-westerly gales throughout, with high confused sea. •>n Wedn.'s.lay hj«. when the vessel was about BO miles off the coast, abreast of O.imaru, a big wave enme over the port snle. washing the cook, named Joseph Hughes, overboard. The unfortunate man was seen lying in the water near the vc.-01. apparently unconscious, as he made no effort to grasp some timber thrown overboard,, which floated within his reach. The vessel was brought found, and a search was made, but no sign of Hughes was discovered. Hughes, who was about 50 years of ago, leaves a '.riuow an-1 f uni'v of ?ev?n in Sydney.
