GREYMOUTH DEVASTATED.
TOWN SWEPT BY A GALE. j DAMAGE AMOUNTS TO THOUSANDS OF POUNDS. Per Press Association. Greymoutli, July 21. The severest gale ever remembered swept over the town on Saturday night and Sunday morning, doing enormous damage. Nearly every place in the business portion of the town suffered some damage. On Mawhera Quay, plate glass windows were smashed, and several verandahs carried bodily away. The roofs of the sheds in the railway yard were torn off, and Detective Campbell's residence was almost totally destroyed.
Victoria Park suffered severely, the grandstand being blown down, and the I fences laid low. Two houses in the course of erection,' near the park, collapsed. The foundry roof was taken, oft, and the residential portion had fences blown down, trees uprooted, and several chimneys blown down. The gale is still raging, and it is unsafe to be in the streets, as sheets of iron, etc., are (lying everywhere. The damage is estimated to run iiito thousands of pounds. Although several narrow escapes have occurred, no serious accidents are reported.
