COLOSSAL FRAUDS.
AMERICAN JEWELLERY SWINDLES MAY AGGREGATE £400,000. New York, May 24. The police are overwhelmed with complaints from jewellers and other firms regarding frauds perpetrated by the recently arrested swindler, Edward Boeek. It is now believe that Boeek secured at least £200.000 worth of jewellery, and some estimates place the amount at £400,000. The total is being added to almost hourly. Boeek was in the habit of pawning jewellery as soon ris obtained. He would establish confidence, by promptly redeeming and returning nn article demanded by the owners. If the jewelley in question hud been pawned for .£IOOO, Boeek wnu'.l pv.-n another lot of .£2OOO. The police state that Boeek made his fiist moiifv by selling valuable loot secure! a t Pekin at the time of the Boxer rising, which was entrusted to him by corrupt Chinese officials. Boeek retained the proceeds of the sales, knowing that the officials would not dure to complain, ■
