DAIRYING INDUSRIAL DISPUTE.
THE COMPROMISE. The following are the principal clauses in the agreement arrived at between employers and employees in the Taranaki dairying industry:— riie period of this agreement shall he for 12 months, August Ist, 1907, to Augu»t Ist, I'.)08: AH factories and creameries shall lio classed according to their output. An employee who is engaged in any work class such employee belongs, but audi clarification shall not entitle any cmclassification shall not entite any employee to the payment for a class other than that in which for the time being he is engaged. Classification of employees shall be obtained only on the recommendation of a manager approved by the directors of the employing company or by the employing proprietor. Such classification certificate shall entitle tlie bidder to bp advanced to the next port when a vacancy occurs. The classification of factories shall lie decided on the .Tist December, the output for the month of Decenilier multiplied by li'/j to lie taken as the annual output. Creameries shall be paid according to their previous year's class until .January 7th. On and after that date the classification of creameries shall be based on the supply reached and all employees shall receive their pay according to the classification for the whole season. The office of the I'nion of workers shall lie the employment bureau in which a register of all unionists is kept. ind employers can engage men from the bureau.
Except in the case of misconduct, 30 days' notice of the termination of engagement must be given by either party. All wages are to be paid on or before the seventh of each calendar month. Two weeks' holiday at average rates of pay shall he given" to all employees who have worked not less than eight months in any one season and holiday of proportionate duration to those who have worked not less than six months and less than eight. This paragraph shall not apply to cheese factories. Agreement is made for provision of a house and allowance of fuel, butter and milk to certain classes of employees.
Any dispute arising during the period of this agreement shall be settled by a committee of six, three to be appointed by the Union of Employers and three by the Union of Workers. Such committee, before entering upon the matter in dispute, to appoint an umpire, and the derision of the committee or umpire, as the rase may tie, to be final. Failing a settlement within 30 days the dispute shall he referrei} to the Arbitration Court for settlement.
The working hours in a butter factory or cheese-factory shall not exceed 10 on
any one day, provided that under exceptional circumstances these hours may
he exceeded, the committee to lie the court of appeaT as to what constitutes exceptional circumstances, and what remuneration shall be paid for such excess time. The actual working time alone shall lie counted. This clause shall not only apply to creameries. Managers of creameries on the Ist, 2nd and 3rd class who have to wind milk in by hand power shall lie paid 5s per week extra in advance of the wages specified in the schedule.
