QUESTION IX HOUSE Of LORDS. : PROTECTIOX OF NATIVE INTERESTS. " Received 17th, 9.28 p.m. London, July 17. In the House of Lords, at Lord Stanmore's request. Lord Elgin consented to present to the House the correspondence respecting the sale of land in the provinces of Bewa and Maitaisiri, Fiji. Lord Btanuiore expressed the fear that it might be possible under the recent Ordinance to authorise, by acquisition, land for public purposes, and deprive the Fijians of the whole of their lands. Lord Elgin replied that the Governor of Fiji was still bound to protect the j interests of the natives, who were un- j able, owing to their declining population to cultivate, all the land nvnilnlx-. It
was the duty of the Government to take all steps to promote the settement of the Islands, and increase the population. Lord Elgin expressed the "belief that the correspondence would satisfy Lord Sanmore.
