RATING NATIVE LANDS.

NATIVE MESISTEII INTERVIEWED.

A XOX-COMMITAL REPLY

Per Press Association. Wellington, July 12. The question of rating on native lands was brought before the Native Minuter to-day by a Taranaki deputation, which complained that blocks owned by natives escaped the payment of rates because one or more individuals had no direct, responsibility or liability in the eyes of the existing law. Mr Carroll said some change should be made in the lnw;"but it would require to be a gradual change. Where native lands were situated within reasonable limits of European settlement, rates should be paid. Natives so situated should be ou the roll, and have a voice in affairs of the Country, and there should bo no escape from their obligation. The Minister did not hold out any very definite hope. that what the deputation wanted would be done tld:i session, but he promised to give his best attention to the matter with a view to remedying existing unsatisfactory state of affairs'.
