MOTOR-RACING DISASTER.
Paris, May 17. M. Alliert I lement, only son of the millionaire manufacturer of motor ears, met with a terrible death while motoring at sixty miles an hour on the Dieppe circuit today.
M. Clement, who was only twenty-two year old, had h»ng been known as an ex- ■ Irivi-r. and during his leave of absence for tile Whitsuntide holidays lie was practising with a 200-h.p. racing ear, which he was to drive in the contest for the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club cf Frame. On approaching the sharp end of the bend at St. Martin-en-Caiupagne he failed to slacken speed, and the ear shot round the curve at such a fearful pace that it swerved from the road and plunged mtii a ploughed field. Young Clement kept his grip of the steering wheel, and tried to stop the engine, but liefore be could do so. flic front wheels of the car sank into the soft ground and the vehicle turned a somersault. M. Clement fell under the car. and on- of the steel liars of the steering gear penetrated hi* neck, pinnillg him to the "round and killing him instantly.
A mechanic named Gaiiderman. who was riding with Clement, had a miraculous escape, heing flnng clear of the cur liefore it overturned. He received only a severe "baking. M. Clement senior lias decided that none nf hi» ears shall complete for the Grand Prix this year.
