Nejson, July 8. , The Nelson volunteers were inspected I this afternoon by Colonel Davies, 08,, mill tliu occasion waß taken advantage I dl' to present Staff Sergeant-Major Rediiiomi with the Stead gold medal and diploma of the Humane Society awarded in recognition of his bravery in rescuing u passenger I'roiu the Nelson-Blenheim eoaiti when it was struck L-y a ilood in Die Collins -River, and washed down and ~ wrecked, directly after the passengers v were rescued. The presentation Was made by tlic Major, who was accompanied by councillors. The Mayor spoke ■ of the hrnvery displayed by SorgeantMajor Redmond, whom he eulogised, and- he. also gave credit to .Mr. .Kmrtouj who wus driving the coach, and who 1 : ludd the horses till the passengei a were gut ashore. Directly they moved, they and the coach were washed down the stream. Mr. O'Brien, who was a coach ■ passenger, Siud that directly lie jumped into the river he was washed down, and >:■- lie spoke of the bravery of SergeantMajor Redmond, and also that of -Newman in keeping the horses in 'hand tili the passengers -were saved, and doing so at his own risk. He thought Mr Newman should also he recognised. Mr Collnriea spoke of Kcdmond having, by his . . / bravery, displayed a soldiery quality, and _ he also spoke of Mr. Newman's bravery.
