McMurtry, who Una been engaged as general manager and metallurgist. I 1 or the last sixteen years Mr* McMurtry. who is an Associate of the Royal School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the Royal Collide ol' Science in Chemistry, and also a Fellow of the Chemical Society, Ims been engaged on copper smelting and refining works, For nine years he was assistant-general aud manager at the smelting works belonging to the Wallaroo and Moontfl. Mining and Smelting Company, Limited. Then lie became manager of tlie Electrolytic-Cop-per Refinery at Lithgow, N.S.W., belonging to the Great Cobar Coppcl' Syndicate, which works' lie designed and erected. Returning to the Wallaroo and Moonta Company as manager of the smelting works, the whole of the designing and construction work, the purchase of"ores, the sulphuric acid, and sulphate of copper works being under his charge. While in this position Mr McMurtry designed and erected a new electrolytic re* • finery and altered the method of smelting, erecting a large calcining plant for fine dressed ores, and rich mattes, based 1 on his own process (which has since been patented and obtained world-wide recognition), materially reducing the losses and rendering the fine ores suitable for blast furnace treatment. It might be mentioned that the annual output of the WallaroQ and Moonta is nearly 1,500,000 lbs of fine copper, the "Handbook of Copper" particularly mentioning their product as being a blister i copper of exceptional purity, and adds ' that the ''"Wallaroo" brand has a de- [ servedly high commercial standing. Mr ! McMiffty has been on a visit of 1 inspection to' the Maoriland coml pany's property for tlie past three weeks, and decided to accept the position as a result of his visit.
