SPEECH BY MR. MASSEY. | Ki :.. 'lO TEE HON. FOWLDS. j ,-ei i'rers Association. ' Auckland, June 18. Air. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, addressing his constituents at Patumalioe, said those on the land and prospective settlers would 'he prejudicially affected by the Land Bill. Mr McNab, at Stratford, said: "Would it not be a line thing it 1 could hand you over endowments suiiicient to pay for rates?" "That is tile bribe held out to people in towns," declared Mr. Massey. Mr Fowlds had made a 'Tabid, vicious, silly and stupid attack" upon him. The trouble was Unit he was tearing the (iovcrnment Land Bill to pieces, lie was willing to hand the whole question over to actuaries. who would divide capital value into interest between the State on one hand and settlers on the other. If in giving the option of purchase, the settler was entitled to make any payment to the State, let it be made, lie did not wish to rob the State of a farthing, but ifr. Fowlds wished to rob the settlers, lie did not think Mr. Fowlds would deny he wan a single taxer, and single tax and Socialism was a bad combination in a Ministry. Tie denied he had ever called Mr. Fowlds a strong man of the Ministry, lie had said, and still thought, he was a dangerous man. As to the Land Bill Mr Fowlds had displayed either the grossest ignorance or wilful inaccuracy, especially when he said millions of acres of native lands would be opened under the optional system. Til regard to his reference to the Ilincmoa trip taken by Mr. Fowlds and his friends to the Sounds, he only intended asking for a return (o see if they paid the full fare charged to the public, and not only ■is lid a day for meals, as had been reported. A vote of confidence was unanimously carried.
