Per Press Association. Auckland, Juno H. In it he Police Court this afternoon Mr Kettle M.M., referred to the visit of inspection of the Court buildings by Dr Purdy, health officer. In a letter to Mr Kettle, Dr Purdy suggested if the district engineer did not consider the matter as coming within his province he (Mr Kettle) should obtain authority to have the suggestions carried put. XJr Purdy also says: "Whilst making my, inspection, I noticed the Bible used for the administration of oaths to witnesses was not in what one might call % very, sanitary condition, and would suggest, ttiat washable covers be procured which could be changed at short intervals. 1 may staite that this has been adopted in several of the magistrates' courts in London." Mr Kettle remarked that the building required a thorough overhaul at regular perious. He wished to publicly ithank Dr Purdy for the prompt action he had taken in the matter.
The oases against the Auckland Harbor Board, in connection with the recent Calliope Dock accident will be taken ait the Supreme Court on Monday next. The total amount involved is
£21,288 3s. In the Shaw, SavlU and Albion's case, in which £16,000 is claimed, a very strong bar has been engaged, those appearing being Messrs F. Earl and H. Gully, for plaintiff company, and Messrs C- D. Skerrctt, K.C., of Wellington, Thomas Cotfter, and R- McV'eagh for the Harbor Board. It Is understood that expert evidence from Australia will be called. Dunedin, June 14.
The following resolution was passed at the meeting of the Employers' Association to-day: "This meeting enters emphatic protest against the recent decision of the Arbitration Court in connection with the Gisborne Painters' award,where it fined an employer £5 for committing a breach, notwithstanding the Labor Department had recovered the difference in wages, and was satisfied that the breach had been unwittingly committed, and the purposes of the Act satisfied. Further that the matter be referred to a Parliamentary Committee, with a view to securing an amendment in the Act in the direction of having all enforced cases dealt with in a judicial way by the Department." "That the meeting further resolves to ask the federation to enter an emphatic protest against Mr tregeai 's rcceut utterances at a lecture to trade unionists in Wellington, and, 11 possible, to prevent the recurrence of such a procedure in future."
