PROGRESS AT THE PORT.

Mr J. 15. Counett, speaking at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, said that another section of twelve feet had been added to the breakwater and completed that day. Excellent progress was being made, and he trusted that by the. time the loan matured they would have 500 feet of the 10(10 feet completed. Wharf widening had been commenced, and he trusted there would be sufficient revenue to carry the work to completion without interruption. Had the Board a good dredge he considered than in three years the harbor would be made sufficient for the accommodation of the large ocean steamers at the wharf. The Board was showing already that the harbor could be safely extended, and at a reasonable costabout half what was paid for the original work. They had f], c satisfaction of knowing that even as they pushed out into deeper water the cost' was still helow anticipations. The fact remained, however, that to get the full benefit of the breakwater extension they must; have deeper wafer and more wharf accommodation. The revenue and in-

creased Irade justified the Board in pushing on wiili the work, and he confidently looked forward to the time when the big steamers would load meat from the New Plymouth wharves instead from the roadstead at Waitara, effecting a saving and giving greater celerity and certainty of dispatch.

In answer to Mr Hughes, Mr Connett said plans for the transhipment shed at the harbor had been approved by the P»ailway Department, and the 'work would he taken in hand.
