Mr Chamberlain, in ;i letter to the organisers of a dinner to Sir Robert lit mil (Newfoundland Premier), said:—'l trust the difficulties in connection with the fisheries question will l>e satisfactorily arranged, and that this will be the prelude to that union with the great Dominion of the West which I believe will ultimately be found most conducive to [the permanent welfare of Newfoundland." J Sir R. Bond remarked that the union of Newfoundland and Canada was at 'present neither desirable nor within the \ t region of practical politics.
