Captain Edwin wired yesterday: Glass fall; tides very high; sea very heavy; rain probably heavy ; rivers high. The Recreation Sport- Ground Committee has obtained permission to remove turf from the road in from of Messrs W. Hooker's and 11. W. Sixl ton's properties at Vogcltown.
The outcome of the numerous mowings of ratepayers at Yogeltown and Hie district in the conduct of their local itfairs, will probably he the formation of a Yogeltown district, giving the residents a greater measure of self-govern-ment than they now enjoy.
The Garrison Band "at I Lome'' at the Breakwater yesterday was spoiled by the weather. A very large attendance had been expected, but the wind and rain kept most of them at home. A few hundred mustered on the sands, and enjoyed a good programme of music supplied by the band. Numerous races for the children and various games were indulged in. Smart showers compelled a rapid dispersal about four o'clock.
The Fitzroy Fire Brigade held a oneman coupling event yesterday for a medal presented bv.Mr J. Bennett. Fireman Lamb (scratch) won easily in lmin 4 i-5 see. including 2sec penalty, Fireman Gritliths being second in lmin 11 2-ssec., with an allowance of 1 2-ssee. The competition was watched with keen interest by a number of residents, and was carried out without a hitch. Lieutenant Boon, of the Town Brigade, acted as judge and timekeeper, and gave unqualified satisfaction to the competitors.
For tliL' lirst time an American negro has won a Rhodes Scholarship. His name is Alain Locke, and he is 21 years of age. Mr Locke, who is a resident of Philadelphia, is a senior at Harvard, while he is completing a four years' course in three year-, after gaining four scho.arships. Mr Locke and four white competitors passed the qualifying examination for the Rhodes scholarship out of a total of liftv candidates represent-' ing Pennsylvania's selection. The commitiee speedily decided that Mr Locke's merits outshone those of his four white rivals. The father of the successful student is a lawyer.
The Brougham street Hall was gaily decorated with bunting and evergreens last evening, the occasion being the annual social of the Taranaki (iuards. About 50 couples attended, and. as all arrangement* had been made for au enjoyable evening, it is not surprising that the social was voted a great success by all who attended. With excellent music: supplied by Mrs. (ieorge (piano) and Mr. Loesch (violin). and a faultless Door, the hours went merrily along until early this morning. Captain Mills officiated as M.C. to the satisfaction of all. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Most of the stairofficers and officers of both the <iuards and the Rifles were present.
The ceremony of "saluting the Hag" in honor of Kmpire Day was duly carried out at Fitzrov school on Thursday afternoon. His Worship the -Mayor, Mr. K. Dockrill. accompanied by the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. d. Tisch arrived at the school shortly before 3 p.m., when the children were lined up in front of the building. After a short inspection of the ranks the Hag was raised and saluted by all present-, the -Mayor giving a short and pithy address suitable to the occasion, many of the youngsters evidently understanding for tbo first time the Kill significance of the patriotism which has built up the Empire.
