A ItATErA\ERS' MEETING. Mr G. A. Marchant, chairman of the ,Stratford County Council,visited Whan"amoinoiia in accordance with a resolution passed at the Council, and at a meeting of ratepayers held on Wednesday, the following resolution was passed:— "That this meeting o£ ratepayers thanks the Hon. the Minister for Public Works for—(a) Declaring that it is not his intention to ask the settlers to metal the uriinotalled portion of the Oliura road. (h) Deciding not to vest eleven mj'-es of dray road from Huikama to Whanga.niomona Saddle until next summer.

(e) The premise of a subsidy of £ for C in connection with the maintenance of this section of road when vested. (ill The continuance of the inaintenane • by CJovornment of the road over the Wliiinganioniona Saddle. (c) The announcement of his intention to place the expenditure of the nnnev voted by Parliament for metalling the Oliura road iu the bands of the local bo'dv.

The settlers on their part declare ilicir willingness to undertake the maintenance of the eleven miles of earth road referred to, and purpose using an increased allocation of riding rate revenue for this purposo. The settlers of the Ohura riding wish to living to the Minister's notice their intention to form the Ohura riding into now county during the coming session of Parliament and immediately upon the con dilution of a new county, and its divi-ion in ridings, to which opposition from any source is not anticip iteil, application will be made to the 1 ina rd scheduling all "thirds"' for roadwork, and, as the ratepayers' share of tlie l.aud Revenue will thus he available so as to synchronise with the vesting of the road, the Minister's approval is solicited to an arrangement which relieves the Government road maint'nancc over the mileage referred to as desired by him and removes the friction and di-salisfaction now existing in connect ion with the proposed expenditure of "thirds" of Land.
