AUCKLAND WINTER SHOW.

THE CHEESE AWARDS. SUCCESS OF TARANAKI MAKERS. Per Press Association. Auckland, May 22. Opening the Winter Show to-day, the Hon. Mr. McKab expressed his pleasure at being present, aud addressing an Auckland audience, not on the Land Bill. (Laughter.) He hoped that the show would form the nucleus of an agricultural hall, which would be the centre of the great agricultural and dairying industries in the North. (Applause.) Too long the public had been accustomed to think the agricultural centre of the colony was in the South, because it got the first start there. He was confirmed in the idea during his recent trip north and south of Auckland that the future of the colony was greatly bound up with the progress of the North.- (Applause.) He had been particularly stnick with the great development in the butter, cheese and hemp industries. In the course of his speech- -"!at~ttef opening of the show, the,. Hon. Mr. McNab said to show thCgrowth of exports from the port of Auckland, he liad compiled some., figures which gave the exact position:""ln 1002, butter exported totalled 27,753ew1, and the value was £124,450, and it had steadily increased till in 1007 it reached 03,302cwt, of the value of £320.42(1. Over the' same period, cheese exports had shown a decrease from aOOOewl, worth £11420, to 3484cwt worth £0248; while hemp had increased from 2034 tons, valued at £48,459, to 0013 tuns, of the value of £255,708. The. gross increase of values on the three products mentioned being from £220,343 to £585.382. These figures showed the rate of development, which must be very satisfactory to the people of Auckland. (Applause.) He believed the public would appreciate year by year the advantages resulting from such an exhibition as this
