THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE

ONE LESSON LEARNED. London, May. 21, •Several member* of the Imperial Conference consider it undesirable to a"um attend as guests of the nation. They I'rcicr complete liberty. Mr Deakin, interviewed prior to Mi aejstrtiire, stated that the ollieiil resolutions unanimously , jasßcd „ t th , Cou . iet'encc were insuilieient to call for congratulations. On several of the most important subjects the dele-ate* had not only failed to induce aceeptance of their proposals, but hid failed even to receive a definite approach toward tnem. Though something had been done in nearly every case that could have beeu accomplished by correspondence, yet the general indirect and unexpressed results justified a very different tone. They constituted a total effect which he would not attempt to present an cstiinalo of. It was impossible at present to say what effect the Conference would produce upon Australia. Every such interchange of views must tend to closer relations betwoen the Motherland and the colonies. Whatever friction might have occurred during the visit was merely individual and transitory; the delegates had separated cherishing the hope that tho great ideas which inspired their gatherings would yet be crystallised and that future Conferences would be placed on a more permanent basis and be better equipped for wide responsibilities.
