STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Stratford Comity Council met on Wednesday. Present; Messrs G. A. Marchant (chairman), Hathaway, Drown, Ifine, McCutchan, Astbury, Ciirihioli'cl and Thompson. It was decided to call for applications for an East road foreman, Mr McLean having resigned. The engineer' reported that lie had not yet arranged for a crushing site. flie dog tax collector will bo allowed 30 per cent on all further taxes collected.
Resolutions passed by Ohura settlers objecting to the proposal of tiie Minister ol Public Works to hand over to tiie Council 'the main road through l'ohukura were received. The engineer's report stated that tenders had been received for work on Jirever s Kirai road deviation and for concrete tunnelling under Opunake road. Cables for Boon's suspension bridge are under order from Home. Contract No. 705 had been cancelled,' the contractor haying failed to arrange for upkeep of the road during the winter. Tiie contractor for No. 700 had signed his agreement. In regard to the Makuri road drain, the engineer recommended that the rushes be cut to allow of wind and sun drying the road more quickly when the stream is low. The repairs lo Favier and Tailrore roads have been put in hand. The pipes for culvert, in front of Midliirst dairy factory have been procured. The gravel for Toko railway station approaches have been obtained. Bullock traffic on Mnngaitnku Saddle, Ohura road, did considerable damage to the formation, and for this the engineer thought, ownof teams should pay. Timber carting from the Huiroi, mill ocr the Makuri and South Doughs • rods was culling up the unmotaller i ti-.n. The nicttvlled portion of Doi ; ; read is also totally unfit to stand ihc carting of heavy loads during the winter months. The North "Mountain road metalling contract lets not been progressing factorilv.
Other business wo« transuded and the Council rose. At a special meeting of the Council Messrs I line Thompson and Hathaway presented a report re the question of the Manirnnni Road Board merging into the Council, or whether (lie Council would consider the question of a, reduction of Administration expenses. The report of the committee of the North Riding slated there was no reason to believe that there is a desire on the of the Manganni Road Board to consider ihe question of merging into the Council, mid with that end in view recommended that a deputation from (he Council should wait on the Manganui Road Hoard for the purpose of discussing the matter.
