QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS
MINISTERIAL PAitTY STItIONGTHF.SKD. I.AIIOH LOSES SFA'FA* SEATS. Received 20th, 12.47 a.m. I'lisljane, May 1!). i lie elections for the State Assembly testerday were favored with tine weather. Interest ran high, a feature being ihe excellent, service done by women workers for ihe varous candidates. The returns up to this morning show the State parties approximately: Ministerial 21, Opposition 2H, Labor 28. There are however, a lot of postal votes still to come in, and one or two seats remain in the balance, notably Herbert, where Sir A. S. Cowley, Speaker of tile late Assembly, may be defeated by a Laborit e, and Flinders, where the Hon. P.. Airey Home Secretary, may give plilec to a l.aborite. All the other Ministers are apparently safe. Received 20th, 12.57 a.m. The Premier, .Mr. Kidston, was returned by a big majority. A surprise was the defeat of .Mr. Tolmie, a Morgailite, who went over to the Pliilp party. I'A-Senator Drake, who contested North Hrisbane, will forfeit his deposit. The Opposition secured ten out of thirteen seats in the metropolitan area, but did not do so well in the country. The outstanding feat urc is the loss sustained by the direct Labor party, wliielt, in the last Parliament numbered 35. Generally speaking, Mr. Kidston's party is stronger, mostly at the expense of Labor. The continuance of the three-party system is imperative, as it would be impossible for Mr. Kidston to carry on without the support of the Opposition or Labor.
