INSPECTING NGARUHOE.

Per Press Association. Wellington, May 18. The Tourist Department has received a telegram Haying that Messrs. McDonald and Cowan ascended Ngaruhoc on Wednesday, that being the first occasion on which the mountain has been ascended in winter. The ascent was most difficult. Snow was encountered from bast? to summit. A great volne of sulphurous steam was met with, and occasionally the atmosphere was sy dense that objects ,only a few feet distant were obscured. They found evidences of a great blow-out or a series of explosions, and that the ernter which is now exhibiting great activity has considerably changed since previous visits. The telegram adds that the proposed ascent of Ruapehn lias been abandoned.
