PROVINCIAL NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RAHOTC.

The annual meeting of subscribers to the Rabotu Hall took place on Thursday night. Owing to the inclement weather there was not a very large attendance. Mr Jas. C.arcia presided. The balancesheet showed that there was a balance' in hand of about £lO, which was regarded as satisfactory. The chairman said the time had arrived when some better hall accommodation was required, and the new committee would have to consider this. Personally, he was in favor of a new hall, as he thought enlarging the present hall would only be temporary, and would not give satisfaction. The majority present were in favor of a new hall and it was resolved, That in the opinion of the annual meeting of subscribers the time has arrived for building a new hall. A number of subscriptions was also promised for the purpose. There were 14 nominated for the committee and the following seven were elected:—Messrs Green. Garcia, Hood. Baker, 11. Phillips, A. Phillip* and Fielder. . At a committee meeting held subsequently, Mr (ireeu was elected chairman and Mr Garcia secretary.

Another competition for the trophy given by the Rabotu Rifle Club was held on Saturday, and it proved to be the final one Mr. Chapman won for the first time, which makes the trophy his property. Subjoined are the scores, the conditions being seven shots each at 2UO and 300 yards:—A. Chapman, scr., 58; J. Guy, scr., 56; A. Phillips, scr., 5:2; J. Colmer, scr., 54; E. Harrison, 3, 47. Another competition will be inaugurated shortly.

OPUNAKE. The s.s. Muritai visited Opunake three times during the past week. Messrs. W. Markham and R. Morris left here on Wednesday per the s.s. Muritai for Wanganui en route to Melbourne, where they intend spending a few weeks' holiday.

The'social in aid of the Convent Fund held last Tuesday was very successful. Excellent music was. povided by Knowles' Orchestra. Mr. W. C. Dudley acted as M.C. During the evening recitations were given by Mr. Swan (Wanganui); phonograph selections by Mr. Dudley, '•You shan't play in our yard," Misses Cook and O'Rorke (encored). Mr. Dudley presented Miss Hicks, who is leaving Opunake, with a gold brooch as a token of esteem and good work in connection with church functions and a memento of her Opunake friends. At the usual monthly meeting of the Town, Board, Mr. W. C. Dudley presiding. Mr. D. Markham was formally appointed clerk. The following tenders were accepted:—Footpath, Heaphy road to cemetery, CI. Vickery, £lO 10s; boulder stone.'das Hickey, 2s (id per yard; blinding, 6. Vickery, is 7d per yard. The clerk was instructed to sue for all outstanding rates, so as not to lose Government subsidy.

EUMOXT COUNTY COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting of the Kginont County Council was held on Friday, Cr. Fleming presiding. Five slaugh-ter-house licenses were granted.

Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. Symes and Jennings, M's.H.R., for accompanying the deputation to the County "Council's conference at Wellington.

A deputation from the Parihaka Road Hoard waited on the County Council re diverting water from Kahui road. The council undertook to pay one-third of the cost, and to sufficiently enlarge the culvert on the Main South road, provided that the Road Board obtains written consent of all parties interested and carries out the work.

Permission was given R. Lambie to erect .telephone posts between Pihama store and factory.

A. E. liayliss resigned his position as ranger for Oeo riding. It was decided that the Parihnka Road Hoard's ranger be given permission to impound cattle on county roads in Rahotu riding only. At present by an oversight, he has permission to impound on all roads in the county,whetlier inside the Road Board district or not. In reply to a deputation from the Road Board 'the Council stated it is not at present in a position to entertain a proposal to purchase a stone-crusher. The bridge engineer's report commended that steel beams for Oeo bridge lie encased in concrete, and he was authorised to have it done, provided cost is not above a certain amount.

The foreman's reports were read and routine work recommended.
