Dunedin, May 13. A deputation representing the llenevolent Trustees waited on the Hon. G. Fowlds, asking that a portion of the poll-tax be devoted to sending indigent Chinese back to China. It was explained that the total cost of maintaining Chinese was about ;CBSS per annum. They could be sent back for £l2 a head.

The Minister replied that iho application should be made to the Charitable Aid Hoard which received subsidies from the Gownuiiciil-.. |i« had no hesitation in saying (hat the Government would not make anv special contribution in aid uf the object asked for.
