Per Press Association. Wellington May 0. The Marine Department intends appointing three surveyors shortly in connection with the marine survey of the colony to assist Captain Sinclair, R.N. A notice published in the Gazette tonight declares hydatids to be an infectious disease.

The (iazete notice of Mr. R. A. Loughnan's appointment to the Legislative Council is made to-night. The estimated population of the colony on March 31 last, excluding .Maoris and inhabitants of the Pacific islands, is 013.873, of whom -184,510 are males, and 420,357 females. Including natives, the total population is estimated at 073,041.

Councillors Cohen, Smith, and Shirtelifl'e have been selected to represent the City Corporation on the Fire Brigade Board constituted under the Five Brigades' Act of last session. The City Council propose to erect salt water baths at Kilbiruic and Island Bay, and are seeking an estimate of the cost.

Many complaints were made during the recent municipal election ol" persons entitled to vote having been struck oil' the roll, and the Council has appointed a committee of investigation. Mr. McLaren, the Labor representative, declared that the condition of the recent roll was worse than that of any he had ever seen, but whether that was due to anybody's carelessness he was not prepared to say. In the Divorce Court to-day, Harry B. Kennerey was granted a decree nisi dissolving his marriage with Annie Kennorey, which was celebrated here in February, 1887. The criminal calendar for the Supreme Court, which opens on Monday, contains a number of serious offences, including two of murder—one against Claude Paget for the murder of a young girl, and the second against Matilda Morris, of Otaki, for the murder of her infant.
