A conference of delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union opened this morning, delegates from all parts of the colony being present. The secretary brought down a recommendation for the Management Committee that, with a view to the encouragement of Rugby in primary State schools, the Union pay, to the extent of say. €131), the transit expenses of teams of schoolboys to lake part in yearly tournament* to lie held in various centres ot the colony, details to be arranged. The secretary thought the proposition was a most important one as bearing on the I I'm lire of llie game. Several delegates strongly opposed the proposal. Kncourclgeinent ol boys should be left to local unions, and more attention should be given to encouraging and assisting smaller unions. Against, this it was urged that if some sueir scheme was not adopted the boys would be diverted to other forms ot sport, such as "soccer" football, which was growing in fav->r. A vote taken to test the feeling of the meeting went against, the proposal.
A motion to terminate the conference as being a mere waste of time was lost, and the meeting adjourned for lunch. At the .football conference, the delay experienced in obtaining replies to communications addressed to the English lliignv Union was discussed.
