GERMANY AND THE POWERS
A REASSURING SPEECH.
Berlin, May 1. Some importance is attached in eertan circles in Germany to the present visit to Berlin of Baron Acrensthal, Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Nieu Erie Pressc states that the good relations existing between Aus-tria-Hungary and Britain and France should enable, under certain circumstances, a mitigation of the all too sharp divergence between those Powers and Germany.
Prince Von Bulow, in a speech in the Reichstag, said that every time the Kaiser journeyed in tlie Mediterranean he had visited the King of Italy, and it was quite natural that King Edward should do the same when touring oil the Italian coast. Friendly relations between England and Italy were ad\v.(n|' tageous and 'desirable, and Germany had no arricre pensee. The Persia-Anglo-Russian rapprochement was an attempt to settle old disputes there. In regard to the Opposition between England and Russia, that could be turned to Germany's account in Morocco, but Germany only desired equal commercial opportunities. There were no controversies between Germany and England which could interfere wiih tile ' friendly efforts of sensible sections of both nations. " Let us," said the Prinde, "cultivate (friendship and alliances, and not be anxious respecting ententes upon matters which don't iui" mediately affect us. Grant others the freedom of movement that we claim for ourselves."
The speech has had a reassuring effect throughout Europe. °
