PROVINCIAL NEWS.
MAKETAWA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The weather lately has been something beastly—hard squalls from west, accompanied with thunderstorms of varying severity. The roads are in a boggy condition, and are in many places dangerous. The supply of milk is rapidly coming down, but, taking things all round, no one is going- to grumble. ] have yet got heard of the turnip blight appearing on our road, and it is lamed it will "sheer oil'." On Monday night considerable interest was evinced at (he election of the sellout committee. Seven nominations were received for live vacancies, the result of the ballot being that the undermentioned were returned:—.!. A. IJridgemnn, ,1,. Salisbury, Walt Laurence, ,1. Simpson, and ,1. Mischewski. Mr. Bridgeman was elected chairman. The children's picnic will be held on 24th inst.
IlAllO'lU The annual meeting of householders was held in the Pvahotu schoolroom on .Monday evening, and, contrary to usual custom, there was a large attendance. Mr. .1. P. Hughson presided. The report and balance-sheet was read and adopted. In regard to the system adopted by the headmaster of locking the door at 9.30 and reopening at 10 a.m., in order to cope with the late attendance of pupils, it w.u decided that the master should be asked to open the door at 9.30 a.m., and keep it open. The position arose from the fact that after the inspectors last visit of inspection he. commented in his report on the large number of lale arrivals at the school, and asked that something he. done to cope with the matter. About sixteen were nominated for Ihe committee, and several of the old committee declined to stand. The following were elected:—Messrs. Hughson, Chapman, H. Phillips, J. Phillips, A. E. Phillips, W. Duggan, J. H. Bleakley. Messrs. Hughson and Chapman were elected chairman and secretary respectively.
At Kahili road and Ngaiki road schools the meetings lapsed. At the former place only four attended, and at the latter place no one turned up. At Oaonni the following committee was elected:—Messrs. J. Young (chairman), A. Lusk (secretary), M. Deegan, 11. I'otter, G. Coombic, Fleming, and H. IJ. -Mills.
-Nominations for the seven seats on the Panhaka ltoad Board closed to-day. I'.ighl, nominations were received, so that unless one candidate stands down there will be an election. The following are •he candidates:—Messrs. J. llothery, P. Willcox, J. Young, J. 0. Rorke, M. Ileegan. C. 11. Revelk J. Guy, and A. < hapman. Six of the above are members of the present board, whilst Mr. Chapman was a member of a previous board. Mr .1. Guy is a novice in road board matters. Mr. C. Sorrcnson, one of the present members is unable to stand owin" to pressure of business. D
WAREA. A meeting of householders, was ] lP ]j in the schoolroom oa Monday night. There was a very small attendance, Mr <:. -li.iies was in the chair. The minutes of last annual meeting were read ami '■""liimcd; the balance sheet was read and proved very satisfactory. The following committee were elected:—
llc-si's Cieorge P. Jones, Thomas Tobin l.dward Ayrward, James Millar, William Clarke, Charles King and Alfred Clothier. Five of the old committee were reelected. Messrs Tobin, and Millar are the two new members of the committee. At the committee meeting, Mr Alfred Clothier was ewcted chairman and Mr. C. 11. King secretary. The funeral of Mr and Mrs W. Julian's little child took place at Okato on Mon- »«}'■ 'J In' funeral was very largely attended. The remains were laid ill the Ukalo cemetery, and the burial service was read by the Kev. T. Fisher.
