VANCOUVER MAIL SERVICE
o-i r, ,■ . , Meluou >''w. April 20. me Cabinet lias considered the Union Company's proposals with regard to the Vancouver service, but Sir John Forrest says it will be some days before a definite reply can be given.
QUEENSLAND'S CLAIMS. Received 20tl>, 11.48 p.m. Melbourne, April 20. A deputation of Queensland Senators interviewed the Postmaster-General and urged consideration for Queensland's claims in the conduct of re-arrangements regarding the Vancouver'service. The, Senators were apprehensible that the New Zealand Government's proposal to join in the new contract might result in the exclusion of Queensland as a port of call.
Mr Chapman promised Queensland's claims complete consideration. Subsequently he stated that the present negotiations have in view an improved ser-. vice with a better class of boats. This Union Company was building some new boats, but it was unlikely that fresh steamers would bo immediately run oa the line, If the contract were completed.
NEW ZEALAND'S ATTITUDE. Per Press Association. Wellington, April 20. We have always been prepared to enter into any reasonable negotiations for a Vancouver service that is subject to calling at n New Zealand port, stated the Acting-Premier iIIonAV. Hall-Jones) this afternoon, when discussing the latest cable message on this subject. ''That has been the difficulty so far: there are two points—calling nt a New Zealand port, and a better class of steamer being put on." Mr. Hall-Jones gave an opinion that the Sydney people were trying to get Sydney' as the port of departure instead of Brisbane, and he was under the impression that they were endeavoring to bring in a bigger service.
