A QUESTION OF ADVERTISING.

THE "NEWS" AND THE EDUCATION l)OAi(i). On Tuesday the Education Board wrestled again with the advertising problem, being- induced by Mr «. Tisch, act'"n 011 a letter from the proprietor of Llie "Taranaki Daily News." The letter complained of the action of the Hoard in decreeing that the ".News' readers should be deprived of the Hoard's advertisements, and stated tiie ability of the paper to give them good service. When the resolution was carried there was a feeling extant Unit the "Daily News" readers were conlined to a few hundreds in the town. The enquiries made since that date, and the facts that have come -;o the knowledge of the members of the Board, were all factors in bringing auout a recognition by tiie Board that the "Daily News" bus been pushed to considerable advantage. -Mr Tiscli, in moving to re-cijui tue resolution of October last which cut tiie

■'News" oil' the Board's general advertising list, said lie had found since then that he had been misinformed as to the papers which were tbu most freely read by Taranaki people. They had been told then that the ''Daily'News'* had little circulation beyond the boundaries of New Plymouth. He had visited Whaiigamoinona the other day, and as lie sat by tho driver of 'the couch he had noticed that the "News" was being thrown out at the gales of settlers all the way along the road. And they found the "News" delivered on the same day as issued away back there in the backbloeks, 82 miles from New Ply mouth. The paper seemed to get all over the province, and he thought itwas neither fair to the Board nor just to the paper that they should neglect such an advertising medium. Mr Faull seconded, saying he had always contended the Board was making n mistake in stopping the advertisements in the "News." They were told that the Budget was read by more people, but even granting that —he didn't care whether it was so or not—the readers of the "News" had a right to a fall knowledge of the Board's business, lie considered tfoj Board should give the fullest publicity obtainable. Mr Monkhouse said be was not prepared to support the matter, on the ground that it was 100 soon to change. The present system should have at least six months' trial before he would be prepared to consider a change. ' The motion was put and carried. Ayes: Messrs Adlaiu, Tisch. Morison, Kennedy and Faull; noes: The chairman and Messrs Monkhouse, Trimble and Morton.

A long discussion ensued on the proposal to allot the Board's general advertising. The chairman mentioned the growth of the '■' NewS 1 ' teirculfltion. lie haii been told five months ago that the "News" didn't reach ttle country ease of Stratford; yet when he had' Visited that district the other day he had found 110 other paper. The Inspector assured him that along the Junction road to Inglewood the "News" was the paper. And he had eome to the conclusion that the "Daily News" had a ivixler circulation than any |other paper they had got. Eventually Mr Kennedy's resolution was carried, with the proviso that the chairman should use his discretion in giving certain notices to loml papers in the districts affected.
