PREVENTIVE FOR ANTHRAX.

The directors of Woolcombers. Limited (England), believe that they have discovered a preventive of anthrax. At the annual meeting of the company at Bradford recently the chairman, Mr. W. Dale, said that they had spent ;C10U() on an experiment, which they hoped would result in the absolute prevention of tile disease.

By means of a certain liquid method of immersion, it would become impossible for anthrax to be contracted. Tlie tests were satisfactory, and when complete full particulars would lie given for the benefit of the public.

"What about New Zealand politics?" Alderman Baker, of Adelaide, all night thinking how they can get it.' II they don't succeed, they pass an Act of Parliament, and yet it' that way.'Nome interesting statistics of the amount spent l>y the public in iiorseracing during a year in England and Ireland are furnished by Sporting Life, in Ireland there are 05 meetings and 1800 horses, which are attended by ISOO lads. In England there are 378 meetings, with 7125 horses. The Sporting Life says: "In estimating the amount spent by the public at the 378 meetings held in England during the year, the tremendous popularity of racing in this country, the greater spending power of the people, the accessibility of the courses to congested populous centres, and other points have to be duly considered. Those who have attended Epsom, Doncaster, Sandown, and other gatherings .will appreciate the Btatement, that thousands of pounds arc spent each day which directly and indirectly benefits labor, and those w/io aim at ploughing up the racecourses have no alternative employment, to ofTer. If the sum of £25,001} be put down as the average amount spent by the public at the race meetings in England in the veal' under review, there is an aggregate of £0,450,000. Thus: Keep and training of starters, £000,300; keep and training of non-starters, £280,800; travelling expenses of horses to and from meetings, £44.250; jockeys' fees and expenses. £50,000; owners' expenses to meetings, £Boo £1,073,350; all amount 'pent by public attending meetings, £9,450,000; add Irish figures, £618,2(10; grand total, £11.141,010.
