GORE-WAIKAKA RAILWAY.
Per Press Association. Gore, April 18. The Acting-Premier, the Hon. Mr Mail-Jones, turned the first sod of the tiore-Waiknka railway to-day in the presence of a large gathering of district residents. Tile Minister, ill the course \'t a sjitfccTi, aUit.o3 UmrTiTTCiir~rsrrrtv^ intimation that £50,000 necessary for the construction of the line had been paid into the Public Works' fund the previous ilay, and as the men were available, the line would be pushed 10 completion without delay. The railway, which is living constructed under the same principle as the Paeroa-Wailii line, will run for a distance o,f 12 miles up the main Waikaka Valley, and will mndioii with the main line three miles above (Jore. Jt is understood that a gang of SO men thrown idle by the stoppage of the Otago Central line at Clyde will be put 011 the Waikaka branch within a fortnight, and although tlio •Minister did not definitely promise, "ns suggested that it would be completed within 15 'or 18 months. The Minister was afterwards entertained at a luncheon, at which the district M.'sH.'K. were present. He left for Dunedin by special train at 5 o'clock.
